Glossary of terms

  • Amniotic Sac - Fluid-filled membrane surrounding fetus.
  • Andrology - The study of male reproductive health.
  • Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) - Medical procedures to aid conception. 
  • Birth Control - Practices or devices to prevent conception.
  • Blastocyst - Early stage embryo, usually 5-6 days after fertilisation.
  • Cervix - Lower part of the uterus connecting to the vagina.
  • Chemical pregnancy - a miscarriage before 5 weeks. Often when a pregnancy test is positive, but there is no foetus seen on a scan.
  • Contraception - Methods used to prevent pregnancy.
  • Ectopic Pregnancy - Pregnancy occurring outside the uterus.
  • Ejaculation - Release of semen from the penis.
  • Embryo - Early stage of development after fertilization.
  • Endometriosis - Condition where uterine tissue grows outside the uterus.
  • Endometrium - Inner lining of the uterus. 
  • Fallopian (Uterine) Tube - Tube through which the egg travels to the uterus. 
  • Fertility - The natural ability to conceive or produce offspring.
  • Fertilization - Joining of sperm and egg.
  • Fetus - Developing unborn offspring after the embryonic stage.
  • Follicle - A small, fluid-filled sac in the ovary that contains one immature egg.
  • Gamete - A reproductive cell (sperm or egg).
  • Gestation - Period of pregnancy.
  • Gynaecology - The study of female reproductive health.
  • Implantation - Attachment of embryo to uterine wall.
  • In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) - Fertility treatment where the sperm and egg are fertilised in a laboratory, and the resulting embryo s inserted into the uterus. 
  • Infertility - The inability to conceive after a year (or more) of regular unprotected intercourse. 
  • Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) - Fertility treatment where specially prepared sperm sample is inserted into the uterus at the point of ovulation. 
  • Low Sperm Count - Reduced number of sperm in semen. 
  • Menstruation - Monthly shedding of the uterine lining, releasing blood through the vagina. 
  • Miscarriage - Loss of pregnancy before viability. 
  • Oestrogen - Primary female sex hormone. 
  • Ovary - The female reproductive Organ that produces eggs.
  • Ovulation - Release of an egg from the ovary. 
  • Ovum (Egg) - Female egg. 
  • Penis - Male external sex organ. 
  • Placenta - Organ providing nutrients and oxygen to fetus. 
  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) - Hormonal disorder affecting ovulation. 
  • Progesterone - Hormone supporting pregnancy. 
  • Prostate Gland - Gland producing seminal fluid. 
  • Puberty - The period during which adolescents reach sexual maturity and become capable of reproduction. 
  • Reproduction - The biological process by which organisms produce offspring. 
  • Semen - Fluid containing sperm. 
  • Sperm - Male reproductive cell. 
  • Sterility - Permanent inability to reproduce. 
  • Surrogacy - Carrying a pregnancy for another person. 
  • Testes - Organs that produce sperm and testosterone, located on the outside of the body. 
  • Testosterone - Primary male sex hormone. 
  • Uterus - Female organ where a baby grows. 
  • Vagina - Muscular canal that connects the uterus to the outside of the body, allowing menstruation, intercourse and childbirth. 
  • Vas Deferens - Tube transporting sperm. 
  • Zygote - Fertilized egg.
