The European Society of Human Reproduction & Embryology (ESHRE) calls for an international limit on the number of offspring per gamete donor!
Limits to the number of offspring per gamete donor are currently only set at national level, if they exist at all, meaning that donor-conceived people can have an unlimited number of donor siblings worldwide.
On 8th July, ESHRE published its position and policy recommendations on this topic, calling on the EU to make a first step towards an international limit by introducing an EU-wide limit on the number of families per gamete donor. ESHRE recommends introducing a European Union (EU)-wide limit on the number of families per gamete donor, starting at 50 families and gradually reducing it to a maximum of 15 families or lower, supported by an EU-wide donor registry to monitor compliance.
These limits have been repeatedly called for by donor conceived people, and the ESHRE Working Group, Co-Chaired by Prof Lucy Frith and Prof Jackson Kirkman-Brown, are answering that call. It’s now up for clinics to confirm they will only work with gamete banks that hold to these limits across all their donors!
